In April, the Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship awarded five seed grants to Wesleyan students embarking on high-impact projects around the globe. Each grant recipient will be reporting on his/her work with blog posts and photos. Here’s the first, a note from Faye Phillips ’13…
Preparing for my project in Shirati, Tanzania has been exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking, but things are really shaping up! The Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship has been very willing and helpful to assist in any preparations and have provided me with interesting relevant reading material and put me in touch with Wesleyan alums who have made careers out of work similar to my project. I have also been working closely with the Maji Safi Group, the organization under which I will start a Girls Hygiene Group, to work out details of the program like the size of the groups and the frequency and agendas of meetings. We’ve decided to split the discussion groups into two age brackets so that we may concentrate on different, more specific and age-appropriate topics. It will be important to prepare as much as I can but also be able to roll with the punches as this new project unfolds…in Shirati, trial and error is key! Now what’s left is to gather some materials over here in the US, and then finally book my flights!
