connectatwesConnect@Wes: Creating Connections: Connect@Wes is a networking exercise and event for Wesleyan students of all class years and interests. Students will apply to participate and will be matched with Expert Advisors (recruiters and hiring managers as well as alumni and parent volunteers) for brief, one-on-one sessions. Students will introduce themselves and their backgrounds, practicing their networking and presentation skills. Expert Advisors will use their experience and expertise to critique what they have heard and give valuable insight on how the presentation might have been more effective. This structured speed-networking event will allow advisors to meet several students in a short period of time. It will allow Wesleyan students to build professional relationships and connections while preparing to join the professional workforce in the future. Private schools certainly value candidates who have participated in a teacher certification program, but have the flexibility to hire teachers with a strong academic background who have not taken education courses. The hiring season for the 2014-15 academic year will begin very soon and we encourage students who are interested in teaching to apply to STA as soon as possible. jumpstart academyJumpstart Academy: Jumpstart Academy is an organization that seeks to educate, equip, and empower Nigerian youths through a two-year Leadership and Entrepreneurship program. This program melds community service learning with business opportunities in order to cultivate a new generation of ethical entrepreneurs. Although based in Ibadan, Nigeria, Jumpstart is seeking interns from Wesleyan for the spring semester. Interns will work directly with Kate Weiner, Jumpstart’s Creative Development Intern, to learn first-hand about building social enterprises through research, grant writing, fundraising, and community outreach opportunities. This position is currently unpaid: however, interns will not be expected to work more than a maximum of three hours per week (the average will be two). Applicants should have a deep love and understanding of the subject(s) or discipline(s) they study or practice. No teaching certification is required. For our younger students (in pre-K-third grade), we hire associate teachers who work as apprentices in the classroom under experienced master teachers. Beginning in grade four, instruction is organized by department. I am the Civic Engagement Fellow for 2013-2014. While a student at Wesleyan I double majored in Psychology and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and completed a joint thesis during my senior year. I am interested in issues of social justice, mental health, media, and global welfare.
