Meet the Civic Engagement Interns for 2024-25

November 1, 2024

Hi everyone! I’m Raissa Fernandes, a junior from New Jersey majoring in Neuroscience. Outside my role as a Civic Engagement Intern, I work as an Office Assistant at the Center for Prison Education, where I help prepare educational materials for incarcerated students. Previously, I have worked with organizations like Teach for America, Lionheart Foundation, and the United States Senate, gaining insight into advocacy, education, and policy. I’m passionate about civic engagement and its potential to tackle social issues and drive meaningful change.

At the Allbritton Center, I’m excited to contribute to initiatives like the Diploma to Ballot initiative, create engaging content for our social media and the ENGAGE blog, and connect students to the diverse civic engagement opportunities available at Wesleyan.

I’m thrilled to join the Allbritton Center and look forward to meeting you all!

You can contact me at rfernandes@wesleyan.edu.

Hello! I’m Katie Williams, excited to join the Allbritton Center as a Civic Engagement Intern. I’m a first-year student from Chicago, Illinois, planning to major in Government and Economics with a Civic Engagement minor. I’m passionate about spreading civic engagement through innovative initiatives that involve students and the community beyond the classroom.

At Wesleyan, I serve on the Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) as a student senator on the Equity & Inclusion Committee. I also work as a Residential Life office assistant in Hewitt. So far, I’ve participated in Wesleyan for Harris, helped register students to vote on National Voter Registration Day with the Allbritton Center, and had the opportunity to attend HBCU Democracy Day at North Carolina A&T with Allbritton. I’m looking forward to connecting my role in Equity & Inclusion with this internship to help make civic engagement accessible to everyone on campus.

Feel free to reach out if you have ideas or questions about events, resources, or opportunities! Throughout my internship, I’ll create content for the ENGAGE blog, assist with civic engagement reports, facilitate student, staff, and faculty community engagement events, and support other programs.

My email is kjwilliams@wesleyan.edu

Hi there! My name is Harry Malcoun and I am a Freshman from Chicago, Illinois. I am excited to be joining the Allbritton Center as a Civic Engagement Intern, and getting the opportunity to work with its amazing staff and student groups. I am an intended Film and Government major and have spent the past five years working for local political campaigns and non-profit organizations in my hometown. I am also currently involved in The Arcadia as a board member and hope to join more clubs and on-campus organizations throughout the academic year!

My main focus in these roles has been to foster strong community outreach and improve communications between politicians and their constituencies. As a Civic Engagement Intern, I hope to be a committed advocate for various student voices on campus and also promote all of the amazing opportunities Albritton has to offer. I’m excited to help with its outreach to the Wesleyan community through the ENGAGE Blog, social media content, and working at events.

Please reach out to (hmalcoun@wesleyan.edu) if you have any questions or want to know more about what Allbritton has to offer!
