According to the American Cleaning Institute, hand washing with soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent the diarrheal and acute respiratory infections that are responsible for millions of child deaths every single year in developing countries.
Global Handwashing Day began on October 15, 2008 as a day to promote hand washing with soap. Each year, over 200 million people are involved in celebrations in over 100 countries around the world. Maji Safi Group promotes a wide variety of disease prevention behavioral changes, including hand washing, and this year we are participating in Global Handwashing Day by partnering with organizations around the world to spread awareness about this extremely important hygienic habit.
Maji Safi is partnering with organizations in the United States, Tanzania, Nepal, India, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Kenya, Honduras, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Liberia, Congo, and South Africa. Maji Safi has prepared a planning guide full of activities, print material, hand washing facts, and media clips. This guide was designed to help partnering organizations have a successful Global Handwashing Day. These learning tools have proven to be useful in Tanzania.
