The News Literacy Project is seeking several interns interns in New York City, Chicago and the Washington, D.C. area, for the summer and fall semesters. The summer internship term will be late May – mid August 2014. The fall internships will begin in mid-September and will extend throughout the semester. Hours will be flexible and largely accommodate the intern’s schedule. The exception will be occasional meetings, events and attending classroom presentations by NLP journalist fellows.

Ideal candidates will have skills or experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Teaching, research, youth mentoring
• Marketing/PR (especially social media management)
• Website maintenance (experience with Drupal CMS or HTML coding are extremely desirable)
• Event planning and/or project management.
• Multimedia production (especially shooting and editing digital video and/or photographs)

Terms

This internship is being offered as either for class credit or for a stipend. Payment will be commensurate with the individual’s experience and skill level, participation and performance.

Basic Duties

The intern’s primary responsibilities will fall into one or several of these major categories:

Curriculum / Classroom

1. Program coordination: Assist in the scheduling and planning of journalist presentations at NLP partner schools in New York, Chicago and the DC area.
2. Research: Collect and organize materials for use in NLP products and programming, including lessons, activities, blog posts, webinars and other presentations.
3. Teaching: Serve as assistant instructor in after-school programs by helping to plan lessons and presentations with the teacher and program manager, delivering select lessons or presentations, sitting in on sessions and working with students on special multimedia projects.

Outreach

1. Event planning: Assist in planning and coordinating select NLP events including field trips to news organizations, journalist volunteer orientations, advisory committee meetings and panels.
2. Journalist volunteers: Assist the program manager and program assistant in contacting and scheduling journalist volunteers for classroom visits and lead the updating and completion of NLP’s online directory of volunteers.

Directory

1. Update journalist’s bios and presentations at schools on NLP’s online directory.
2. Prepare and maintain a spreadsheet detailing progress toward completion of each individual bio.
3. Organize files of journalist presentations and evaluations; identify successful presentations and maintain a spreadsheet detailing what worked and what did not.

Digital Unit

1. Assist with the coordination and promotion of the digital unit
2. Deliver a teacher guide, flash drives and headsets to schools that are doing the unit
3. Assist teachers with technical issues relating to the unit (with NLP supervision)

Administrative – Washington, DC only

Provide administrative support to CEO and senior management team with programs, events, website maintenance and special projects as assigned.

 

Supervision

The interns will primarily report to NLP’s regional manager or coordinator. The supervisor will meet with the intern on a regular basis, in NLP’s office, on campus or in other informal locations. She will supervise the intern’s work will inform the student of opportunities to assist with, and observe, journalists’ classroom presentations and the after-school programs. She will also keep the student informed of upcoming meetings and possible participation in NLP events.

The DC-based interns may also have occasional contact with Alan Miller, NLP’s founder and president, and supervision by Mary Lynn Hickey, NLP’s Vice President for Administration, and possibly other staff members as well.
