“The CitySingers of Hartford will perform “A Chorus of Peace” at the Wesleyan University Chapel, 221 High Street in Middletown, on Saturday, May 18 at 7pm. This is a benefit event for Artists for World Peace. As part of the evening, Artists for World Peace will host an art show and sale adjacent to the chapel, in the Zelnick Pavilion.

The CitySingers performance is generated by the chanson melody “L’homme Armé” (The Armed Man), a popular song originating in the 15th century. This and other texts in the program are filled with imagery about what it means to be equipped to protect and strive for peace. The program will include excerpts of contemporary Welsh composer, Karl Jenkins’ stirring composition based on “The Armed Man,” as well as a setting of this melody by 15th century composer Antoine Busnois. Through creative expression of choral and instrumental music combined with ethnic dance, featuring Sankofa Kuumba Dance Ensemble, CitySingers offers this performance as a symbol of peace for all. The dance ensemble will wear the International Peace Belt during their performance.

The Zelnick Pavilion, which is located adjacent to the Wesleyan University Chapel, will be transformed into an Art Gallery featuring the work of these seven contemporary artists: photographers Claudia Hehr, Chris Dei, and Kate Clay, with fine art printer Antoon Taghon; painters Kamar Thomas, and Kathi Packer; mixed media artists Wendy Black-Nasta and Ashby Carlisle. In keeping with the evening’s theme of peace, much of the art on display was inspired by the work of Artists for World Peace and its International Peace Belt. The gallery show will run from 5pm to 10pm. The art show is free and open to the public.”
