For the Office of Community Service

—Non-Work Study Eligible— 

The Office of Community Service coordinates student volunteer opportunities with 21 partner organizations and projects. Student van drivers are responsible for transporting students to and from volunteer and service-learning opportunities.  The driver will need to:

  • Drive a seven or eight passenger vehicle to transport students
  • Obey all traffic laws
  • Maintain regular schedule at OCS
  • Be at least 20 years of age and have a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least 2 years

Hours per week: will vary depending on availability and schedule
Hours needed: any time between 7am and 9pm, Monday – Friday; some weekend hours available

Amazing Grace Food Pantry

Students working on this project are directly responsible to the director of St. Vincent de Paul Middletown.  When “on duty” at the food pantry, Outreach workers are dedicated to reaching out to shoppers to help facilitate a solution for problems the individual or family may be encountering with social service issues in their lives.   This includes, but is not limited to, food stamps (CHS/SNAP), health care including prescriptions/CHC/appointments, rental/housing, DSS/DCF/WIC, energy assistance (season dependent), tax assistance (season dependent).

Student must be available at two days a week during the following times: Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday from 12:30 – 4pm. Students need to be committed and compassionate.

Middlesex County Historical Society

The Middlesex County Historical Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Middlesex County and providing programs for adults and children to increase their understanding of the area’s past. Museum exhibits, historic graveyard walking tours, Civil War re-enactments. and a lecture series are among its many annual events.This position offers an opportunity to learn what it takes to run a small historical museum. 5-10 hours/week. Specific duties may include: 

  • Cataloging of artifacts and manuscripts dealing with Middletown history 
  • Researching possible grant opportunities 
  • Fielding genealogy and general inquiries from the public 
  • Project-based work on current or future exhibits

To apply for positions within these programs, you will complete the OCS Registration process first on our website, and then reach out to Program Coordinators to ask about working in their program. To be eligible, you must receive federal work-study.

Cross Street

The program runs Monday – Thursday 4:15 – 6 at the Cross Street Church. Ten Wesleyan students meet individually twice a week with younger students. The kids range in age from 7 – 14, and their tutors help them do their homework and focus in on any specific difficulties the kid is having in school.

Green Street Teaching and Learning Center

The After School Program is open to area students in grades 1 – 8 from 3-6pm, with specific focus on the arts, math and science.  Assist as a homework helper in the after school program from 5pm – 6pm.

Scholars in Action

Tutors will participate in the development of enrichment at Keigwin Middle School (6th grade) and Woodrow Wilson Middle School (7th and 8th grade). Wesleyan students will provide tutoring and mentorship to students.

Traverse Square After School Program

This program runs Monday – Thursday from 4 – 6pm, with occasional Fridays. Each day tutors help kids with homework and then play games, do arts and crafts, and work on projects. Tutors are asked to commit at least one day per week.

WesESL

Contact: Samuel (wesesl@gmail.com) WesESL runs during the school day and tutors assist children grades K-5 at Macdonough Elementary School with their English as a Learned Language lessons. Schedules vary based on tutor availability. Tutors choose at least one weekly shift.

WesReads/WesWrites and WesMath

These are daytime tutoring programs that match Wesleyan students with Macdonough Elementary School students. Tutors choose at least one weekly shift to provide assistance to small groups in higher-level math or reading. 

Woodrow Wilson Education Program

This intervention program serves 7th and 8th graders at Woodrow Wilson Middle School who are failing subjects and are at the risk of retention. Tutors assist with homework, help them organize their materials and assignments, and serve as a general support for changing academic performance.

YMCA Andre’s All Stars

Contact Sarah (srenjilian@wesleyan.edu) The YMCA, thanks to a grant from NBA player Andre Drummond, hosts an after-school program for middle school youth. The program has a sports component and a tutoring component. Wesleyan students interested in tutoring, mentorship and/or athletics are encouraged to join.

Jennifer Roach is the Civic Engagement Fellow in Allbritton for the academic year 2015-2016. She is a recent Wesleyan alumni, class of 2014. Since graduating, she has moved to Hartford to continue developing Summer of Solutions Hartford, an urban farming internship program she worked on during her time at Wesleyan.
