image007Laurenellen is a warrior for needs-responsive, community-led approaches to building civic technology and social innovation. In her most recent position, she was focused on “a stronger and more open Internet for stronger and more open communities.” During the workshop, Laurenellen will introduce us to her “Build With” philosophy and teach practical tools that can be applied in our own mission-driven work.

Lunch will be served for those who register.

Laurenellen McCann (@elle_mccann) is a social practice artist, organizer, and recovered policy wonk. Her work focuses on community-led approaches to governance and social innovation, emphasizing creativity and collaboration online and offline. In 2014, she started the movement to bring these practices into civic technology under the banner, “build with, not for”. Currently, Laurenellen works with New America directing a ground-breaking initiative on civic life in Washington, DC. In past lives, she was a Civic Innovation Fellow at the Open Technology Institute, a consultant with the Smart Chicago Collaborative, and the founding director of the Sunlight Foundation’s state and local team. Laurenellen sits on the Advisory Board of the DC Funk Parade and recently co-founded a dinosaur co-op. (Long story.) In 2013, TIME Magazine named her one of 30 people under 30 changing the world. Jennifer Roach is the Civic Engagement Fellow in Allbritton for the academic year 2015-2016. She is a recent Wesleyan alumni, class of 2014. Since graduating, she has moved to Hartford to continue developing Summer of Solutions Hartford, an urban farming internship program she worked on during her time at Wesleyan.
