A group of Wesleyan students from Wes for Peace is traveling to Washington, DC from March 12-15 to lobby Congress to pass the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act. The act serves as an important first step in ending mass incarceration that works to reduce several lengthy mandatory minimum sentences, gives judges more discretion, and lowers the population in federal prisons. Through the Friends Committee on National Legislation, a lobby group in DC, students will meet with hundreds of students from colleges across the country to receive in-depth advocacy training and hear keynote speeches on prison reform. At the end of our visit, we’ll meet with our representatives in the House and the Senate to urge them to adopt the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act. With grassroots lobbying, there’s strength in numbers. We want to bring as many Wesleyan students to DC as possible to show them we’re not okay with this discriminatory, unfair justice system, and hope that as many students as possible will come lobby with us.
