Gilead Community Services

Two 2018 Summer Student Internships (June – August)

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

REPORT TO:  Dan Osborne, Gilead CEO; Laura Patey, Assoc. Dean of Student Academic Resources, Wesleyan University

LOCATION:  Middletown, CT

OVERVIEW:

Gilead Community Services is a mental health nonprofit which provides a broad spectrum of mental health services to over 700 individuals living with chronic severe mental illness in Middlesex County (see gileadcs.org).  Gilead is proposing to expand its services to a broader population through the creation of a community-based Mental Health Resource Center.  The Center will serve as a starting point for individuals and their families looking for mental health services, information, resources and support.

As envisioned, the Mental Health Resource Center would either provide directly, or connect individuals with clinical services, associated medical care, respite care, wellness supports, family education and support, a dedicated pharmacy, benefits coordination, short-term inpatient care, and private pay residential services.

These two unpaid internships offer an opportunity for students to become an integral part of planning an innovative approach to addressing a critical need for mental health services that are accessible to the broader community. The community-based collaborative approach could serve as a model for other communities looking for ways to address unmet mental health needs.

STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES INTERNSHIP

Provision of adequate student mental health services has become a challenge on many colleges and universities.  Centrally located in the state, with a local University and a college, the Mental Health Resource Center could be well-situated to help fill the gap in student mental health services.  The Student Mental Health Services Intern would help explore the feasibility of adding student-oriented therapeutic care to its menu of services.
