Loam magazine, founded by Nicole Stanton ’15 and Kate Weiner ’15, launched almost a year ago in July 2015 with the mission of “promoting the work of pioneering individuals and organizations in the realm of sustainability.” Loam is a response to the environmental “doom and gloom” that dominates narratives around multiple and intersecting environmental crisis. The magazine creates a space to tell stories about solutions and the individuals who are dedicated to creating positive change. In the most recent issue, which is available online, they interviewed the Founder of RAW, Heidi Luerra, musician Jess Best, directors of the Aspen Center for the Environmental Studies, Arin Trook and Chris Cohen, and other fascinating people. This issue includes photography, illustrations, recipes, and “how-to” guides for sustainability skills.

Recently, the team sent us some updates about their work, and we are excited to share them with you! 

Loam just topped 15,000 subscriptions, with more coming in every day. If you want to follow their work, you can subscribe to their mailing list, or follow them on Instagram. This summer and fall, the Loam community is coming together in person for events in Colorado, including permaculture workshops, outdoor adventures, and Denver’s first zero-waste market! With Kate living in Boulder and Nicole writing in Aspen, these in-person events will be a natural extension of the online community they have created. 

In addition to Kate and Nicole, Loam now includes Kimora, a yoga educator, Lily, an earth spirituality columnist, Sage, a poet, and Alison, a neighborhood naturalist. All together, this staff makes a powerhouse team! Going into their second year, they aim to cultivate a larger presence in their immediate community and abroad and develop a business model for Loam that allows them to fairly compensate their contributors. We are looking forward to hearing more about their success!
